Interviewer: Could you introduce yourself and share how you began your journey in the diamond industry?

Polisher: My name is Harsukh Thesiyai, and I arrived in Surat in 1986 at the age of 12. Life was uncertain then, and I started working at a young age. With no clear path ahead, I found my way into the diamond industry—and soon, it became a deep commitment.

I began as an apprentice, working on small stones and gradually honing my skills. Eventually, I was entrusted with larger diamonds, which marked a significant shift in my journey. As my craft evolved, I took on bigger and more complex challenges, each one pushing me to new levels of mastery.

In 2013, when I joined Shivam Jewels, I was welcomed as part of the family. The respect and trust placed in me allowed me to refine my craft with even greater care and dedication.

Interviewer: How did you expand your skills beyond round diamonds?

Polisher: My journey began with round brilliants, the industry standards at the time. I mastered various sizes—2, 5, 10, and 15-carat stones. However, diamond artistry demands constant evolution.

Through a reskilling program at Shivam Jewels, under the guidance of Nikunj Bhai, I took the challenge of crafting fancy shapes, including a 5-carat oval and a 7-carat pear cut. These projects pushed my craftsmanship to new heights.

Fancy shapes require a deeper level of precision—each facet studies how light flows through unique angles. It’s not just about cutting; it’s about revealing the diamond’s natural brilliance with every turn.

Interviewer: What was the most challenging piece you've worked on?

Polisher: The 27-carat diamond was one of the most demanding pieces I’ve worked on. It was a Triple X, VS1, H color stone, and it took 12 days of meticulous polishing to achieve its final form. Every phase required absolute precision to ensure that each facet reflected the diamond’s inherent brilliance.

I’ve also polished several 10 to 12-carat D FL diamonds, each with distinct brilliance and facet alignment. These signature cuts have continually refined my skills, pushing me to approach each stone with a deeper understanding and respect for the craft.

Interviewer: Can you explain the intricacies of your role as a master polisher?

Polisher: Every diamond holds its unique brilliance, and our role is to bring out its beauty and value through every cut. As master polishers, we achieve what machines cannot—a perfect harmony of size and quality that only skilled hands can master.

Though the process involves risks, inclusions in a diamond can become more prominent if the pressure applied during polishing is misaligned. Overheating can also trigger issues like crystal or feather inclusions, affecting the diamond’s integrity — that’s what makes true craftsmanship so vital. Every stone presents its challenges, and we approach each one with fresh eyes, ensuring every piece is a bespoke creation.
